The Association for Computing Machinery Pepperdine University Chapter moves forward in community outreach and development beyond its campus borders. The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Pepperdine University chapter announced today its plans to continue to expand its community outreach and development efforts to promote educational technology and computing beyond its campus borders. Last fall, ACM Pepperdine University donated IT books to underprivileged students in the Nepal region with the help of its corporate supporters, O’Reilly Publishing and Culminis, Inc. Led by ACM Pepperdine’s Co-President, Jeff Lee, the books were personally delivered to teachers and students in a Nepal Computer Center. Jeff and other members of the Community Development Network in Nepal are shown in the picture to the left. In 2007, ACM Pepperdine plans to reach out to its regional community, as well as others worldwide.
Lani Fraizer, President of ACM Pepperdine says, “Our ACM Pepperdine officers are focused on encouraging innovative programs in technology and education. Our community is quite unique, with our officers consisting primarily of doctoral students, who also have professional careers full-time. With our academic and professional networks, it provides us an opportunity to give back to the community on many levels.” Our ACM Pepperdine officers are employed by companies such as Culminis, Bank of America, California State University, Stephens Group, Memphis City Schools, Community Development Network, Long Beach Memorial Hospital, Robertson County (TN) Schools, Texas Windstorm Insurance Association, UpSouth Consulting, and Stanford University. With the help of our officers and the Pepperdine University campus community, ACM Pepperdine hopes to bring more awareness to the value of information and computer technology in education. ACM is an international educational and scientific society which supports the professional growth of its members by providing opportunities for life-long learning, career development, and professional networking. ACM Pepperdine was first initiated by Dr. Linda Polin , Professor of Graduate Education and Psychology on the Pepperdine University campus in 2004.
